Through Careful Observation

The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it describes the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room. Just before sunrise, with the addition of an ideal village, This oil canvas painting is dominated by a moon- and star-filled night sky. The morning star, to the left of center surrounded by circles of white and yellow light. Beneath this sky sits a village of houses surrounding a church with blue-black mountains in the background. A tree sits at this night scene, it reaches almost to the top edge of the painting like a link between land and sky.

  1. Kia ora Helena! How are you doing today? Olive here - happy to say the weather is a lot better. Blue skies and wind are definitely an improvement over grey skies and wind!

Thank you for your blog post. I love this activity! It’s all about painting! Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night” is one of my favourite pieces of art! I replicated it on a jean pocket! It was super fun! It's great to see you sharing another person's observation of the painting but I'd love to see what you can see in the artwork!

I can see stars, trees and rooftops. What can you see?

Remember if you find some good information you need to let others know where you can find it. Including a link of the website you've used for research is really helpful! For example, this is my research link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starry_Night

Writing in our own words is very important. It shows your readers what you have learned from the activity!

    Ngā mihi,
    Olive
